Before buying these bluetooth headphones, I own the full sized Sony DRBT50, which has amazing battery life. It would last me for a couple of weeks of 3-4 hours of daily listening before a recharge is necessary. I also own several high-end headphones such as the Shure SE425-V earbuds, AKG K702, Sony MDR-V700DJ, Sony MDR-7506, and finally the Monster Dr Dre Beats Studios. All these headphones have their own distinct characteristics, but none brought out the smooth and silky clarity like the AKG K702. Yes, if you want the exaggerated bass response of the Beats, that is your own cup of tea. It has its own appeal, but from a personal perspective, my listening tastes have been beautiful ethereal vocals and classical like Mozart. Same goes for the Sony MDR-V700DJ. The reason why I'm giving you this background is because I have sampled many different headphones to qualify this review of the Sony HBH-IS800.
The Sony HBH-IS800 are truly a marvel of engineering. I was looking at the Jaybird Freedom Bluetooth headphones prior to the purchase of these Sonys. My friend runs marathons and she purchased the Jaybird headphones for her training. She highly recommended me to them. However, after doing further research, I stumbled onto these Sony bluetooth earbuds. These Sonys are considerably smaller than the Jaybirds and costs considerably less at forty nine bucks.
I wanted something that is cordless to run and weight-train at the gym. I was not happy with the Shure SE425-V because the cord kept getting in the way. The reason why I was looking for something like this instead of being just happy with the Sony DRBT50, which are also bluetooth, was that I need something small that I could use for the gym. The Sony DRBT50 are full-sized headphones that wrap fully over your ears. I tried them at the gym and quickly realized they got my ears hot VERY VERY fast.
These earbuds are just amazing in their small size. Barely bigger than my Shure SE425-V at the earbud section AND without the cord that constantly gets caught or snagged at the various gym equipment.
The performance of these small earbuds are adequate for the gym. They are plenty loud. I still don't know why the other reviews state that these are not very loud. Given, they aren't nearly as loud as my Dre Beats Studio, but those cans border on ear-bleeding decibels if you crank them up. I truly am comfortable with something that I enjoy at an emmersive noise level with my music without necessitating chronic hearing loss. Now, having said that, the performance of bluetooth headphones are not remotely near the audiophile levels of such cans as the AKG K702s that I have for my home entertaining purposes. These bluetooth earbuds is immersive enough, but it has this raspiness at the high end that sometimes annoys. Especially when I am so used to listening to my AKGs at home. Maybe these need a long break-in time (the AKG K702s need 300-400 hours of break-in time before they became silky smooth). However, at the gym, I am trying to block out the surrounding gym noise that can include people talking and the crappy music that they play overhead. My music at the gym is for getting me energized to do the next set, so whatever music motivates me, I put on my playlist. But I do tend to concentrate more on the movements of my exercises than the music, especially counting the number of reps I am able to do on each set. Thus, the music becomes more of a background noise than pure, unadulterated enjoyment. So, it doesn't need to have the high fidelity that I'm used to at home.
Speaking to the fidelity, I certainly wouldn't want to have these as my primary headphones (I have the Shure SE425-V for more of the everyday mobile listening situations). They do lack the bass that bass-heads like so much, but for me, the bass is perfectly adequate. For something as small and mobile, they are an amazing feat of accomplishment. However, if you're looking for a great soundstage and clarity, look for something that are not bluetooth. Or at least not anything that's Bluetooth 2.0/2.1. With the Bluetooth 3.0 implementation, the bandwidth gets expanded considerably compare to 2.0/2.1, so maybe Bluetooth 3.0 headphones that are coming down the development pipeline would solve this issue.
I pair these earbuds to my Samsung Captivate. It was one of the easiest pairing I have ever had to do. No need for a passcode or anything requiring complication. I just set my phone on Bluetooth discovery mode and it detected these HBH-IS800s right away.
For phone conversation purposes, they are perfectly adequate. I was talking to my wife with these during my trip back home after the gym. I asked her if she was able to hear me well and she told me she could hear me perfectly. Her voice on my end was perfect, since these earbuds are sound-isolating from the rest of the car noise. There are some reviews out there that indicate that these don't fit in their ears. My personal experience have been stellar. I use the medium sized adaptors and not once did they fall out, unlike my wired earbuds that gets caught and snagged on gym equipment. They kept perfect sound isolation where I don't have to hear the outside noises at all.
The treadmill is where these earbuds shine. With my Shure SE425-V, the tugging of the cord causes a noticable rustling noise in my ear everytime I move my feet, which is quite distracting. Not so with these earbuds. They wrap around the back of your neck and just rest on your shoulders.
I've heard and read that the battery life on these things are about 3-4 hours, which is about equivalent to the Jaybird Freedoms. I have never had a chance to expend the full charge on these earbuds. Most of my workouts last at most about 1 and a half hours. After which, I usually have them plugged onto the wall to get my next workout ready when I get home. I did try to see how long they last personally by listening to them at home, but I'm so used to the AKGs that I ended up switching over to them after about a couple of hours of listening.
I personally like my equipment to last and like any other bluetooth headsets, the biggest worry I have about these earbuds are the battery replacement. I don't think they are user replaceable. So, I'm worried that I can't hold onto them for more than 2 years before the battery no longer can hold a charge.
Speaking of charging these earbuds, other reviews hit the nail directly on the head about the charger. The thing is HUGE compared to the earbuds themselves. The earbuds take a proprietary connection to the charger. It's unfortunate that it is not charged via USB/micro USB. That would have definitely been nice. No having to lug around this large charger everywhere or having to worry about losing it and be SOL. And USB/microUSB connectors are all over the place these days. By the way, the Jaybird Freedom are charged via USB.
So in conclusion, these Sony HBH-IS800 earbuds have served me exceptionally well for my purposes at the gym and on the ever infrequent instances for phone conversations. My experiences have been truly exceptional with these earbuds. I certainly would purchase these again if given the chance.

Ok I am a very techy guy and I must have read over a 100 reviews on 2-3 models that I was considering and I ended up buying this. They are great, very light, they won't fall off your ears like some people say. Cord maybe a little short for some people. sound is clear BUTTTTT....
1) Music,
it is too damn low ! I took it to the gym and I could hear everything around me. I have an iPhone 4S and volume was all they up and still very weak sound.
tried my wife's Droid 2 and still the same problem. tried my son's Samsung, still the same problem.
2) cellphone calls, there is a delay of like a half a second which you have to get used to if you are planning to keep it. Sound was also too low.
As I said they thought of everything and they got so worked up in all the details to the extent that they forgot what the MAIN purpose of the product. I am returning them for sure. I need an actual sound not somebody whispering in my ears. I will try the Motorola s10 HD or the LG maybe I will have a better luck.
by the way just in case you wonder, I am not 85 years old and my hearing is on the strong side and my advice is still...DON'T BUY......
